A short while ago, I realized that August 19, 2022 was International Photography Day - who knew? I'm surprised I didn't but nonetheless, I set out on a mission to spend time photographing something, somewhere that day.
I meant to go after work one day but forgot my camera so went home as per usual and decided to head out for sunset photos. For some reason, I often had this idea in my mind that going out for pictures after-hours was hard to achieve or bad to do as a mom with a little one at home. Turns out, all you have to do is ask your spouse to be home with the kiddo every once in a while to earn the opportunity to get outside and shoot when I feel called to. He said yes, so for this adventure, I chose to go to Neck Point Park in Nanaimo to see how the sky would play out.
I was eyeing the sky to see how the colours and clouds were developing before I left just in case it wasn't worth it. After a while, I decided that the least I could do was go and check it our for myself so after dinner, I gathered my gear and off I went to catch the sunset from the edge of the ocean.
I don't often shoot in early morning or evenings so sometimes I find it tricky to capture the best image once it starts getting darker. not-to-mention that I misplaced my tripod handles during our recent move and couldn't bring that with me to offer better stability and a chance at long exposure photography. but such if life and every photography adventure is always a learning experience.
The sunset didn't turn out to be as grand or gorgeous as I had envisioned it would be in my mind's eye prior to leaving but it did provide a nice variety of colours in the sky to make it worth the little trek to North Nanaimo. I always find such a moment of peace as I slowly watch the sun set beyond the horizon. It's amazing how such a shift in light can cause help to unwind your mind.
